Laika’s Ballad

I was already on my way, a stray dog in space, I felt like
barking at the moon as if it called me
didn’t know why it did before you told me..
you said ’this is what you’ll be, a stray dog in space’
giving me a name and you are right
I don’t have a place here
I don’t have a place here on these grounds, send me away…

tie me down, wrap me in, save me no oxygen
I never had a safe home on these grounds
launch me out anywhere, send me all ’round the sphere
’round, no more gravity, pulling me down
tell everyone that I’ve loved
that my love was not enough for this earth
where my words make no sense
I am an orphanage dog, I’ve got nothing to lose
no weapons in defense

oh and one day this ship flies back without me
did you really think I’d return?
no, I’ll just leave you behind me
– and smile at that little dot you’re on from up here…

keep on polluting, keep lying, keep shooting at each other
you’re not my sister or my brother
gold in the government’s mine, I’m their unwanted child
run your tests on me, see if I work now
tell everyone that I’ll lose that my heart’s in the moon
and it’s calling me, calling me home
I am an orphanage dog, I’ve got no one to trust
send me out alone

oh and you’ll see this ship fly back without me
did you really think I’d return?
no, I’ll just leave you behind me
– and smile at that little dot you’re on from up here…

little world, would you care if I go
would you care, little world, would you care if i go?
little world, would you care if I go
little world, would you care, would you care if I go?
all this time I’ve been lost in your hands
would you care, little world, would you care if I go?
little world, would you care if i go
would you care if I go, little world, would you care?
